Why Violins?
Maybe because I always wanted to play one…
maybe because they are beautifully shaped like a woman’s BODY… and
why not?
Artist’s Statement
My life changed the day I discovered the work of Joseph Cornell, American assemblage master. I wanted to be an artist, but there was one problem: I can’t draw!
My last formal art course was in 7th grade, and it ended with my teacher suggesting that I consider another elective. It was many years later when I discovered that there are other ways to create art besides traditional drawing and painting.
Collage and assemblage opened worlds within me, and I altered everything from chairs to typewriters. Released from the tyranny of a blank canvas, my creative spirit awakened from a long hibernation, hungry to create.
I joined an artists’ collective in Portland OR showing assemblage pieces built into clock cabinets and desk drawers. Rummaging through a flea market I saw an old, beat-up violin and thought, hmm.
Spurred by repetitive questions about what each piece means I began writing poetry for them. They provide a glimpse into my thoughts and inner world, as well as each piece of artwork. These are on the backs of the violins and are also posted next to each piece, so they are easily viewed.
I hope you enjoy this collection, most of which has been created during the pandemic. If nothing else, maybe it will make you say, hmm…
